Though Serena Williams, tennis pro, has 23 grand slam awards under her belt, she is now an expectant mother who is having trouble getting comfortable while sleeping. It was reported that the champion went on Twitter for suggestions on how to get a comfortable night’s sleep during this special time in her life. Her Twitter fans came through for her with many suggestions on how to turn and how to use pillow placement for comfort. Most pregnant women have trouble learning how to sleep comfortably with a pregnant belly. It only makes sense. Your body goes through so many changes during pregnancy, it’s almost like getting used to a new body and how to maneuver that body while lying down.
There are some famous mattress companies jumping in the game that provide a much better night’s sleep than a regular cheap mattress. A budget mattress is not what you need when you’re pregnant, especially as the months pass and the belly extends itself way past what you are used to. Quality sleep is essential during pregnancy. The new baby is taking nutrients from your body that you’ve never shared before. And we all know, while pregnant, the baby and your health are vitally important. A good night’s sleep is a huge part of that process. Serena says that she used to hear pregnant women say, “I can’t sleep.” and now she totally understands why.
The National Sleep Foundation says that the average person requires 7-8 hours of sleep to function well and be in good health. Serena, is one of those champions that is used to getting 4-5 hours of sleep and being able to feel energized. That time period is over as she enters a pivotal part of her life. Her body now requires 7-8 hours of sleep. Serena says she goes to bed around 10pm and does not awake until 6 or 7. This is a lot more sleep than she needed to become the tennis champ which she is currently. Most expectant mothers know about this difference. Their bodies now tell them how much sleep they actually need and many times it is not up to them, but up to the baby, just how much rest is needed. Though Serena is a phenom on the court, she is just like every other woman during this very natural part of being pregnant.
Staying fit is highly important for a healthy pregnancy and a healthy birth. Serena is able to still practice during these latter months of her pregnancy because she listens to her body and when she feels like sleeping, she sleeps. Many doctors credit her for listening to her body’s need for sleep, as the reason she is able to remain so active. She is still out there on the court preparing for not only a comeback but a healthy and easier birth.
